What sets Leaper bags apart
One strap, three ways to carry
The canvas slings switch between crossbody, single-shoulder and hand-held briefcase carry. On the 13-inch model the padded strap is reversible. A top handle gives an easy grab when the bag comes off the body at a desk or on a seat.
Locks built into the zippers
Several slings close with a password or combination lock instead of a plain pull. The anti-theft crossbody opens one-handed, and the stitching around the lock is reinforced. A hidden zippered pocket on the back sits against the body, out of reach in a crowd.
Power and audio pass-through
The brownish green crossbody and the washed canvas sling have an exterior USB port and a headphone jack. A power bank stays inside while a phone charges through the side of the bag.
Pockets counted in double digits
Most messenger-style slings carry ten to twelve pockets, from a padded laptop sleeve to pen slots and small open pockets for cards. The airflow models add a breathable back panel that sits between the canvas and your shirt on warm days.
Canvas, nylon and polyester: what each bag is made of
Canvas covers the slings and the plain kids daypacks. Trim on the slings is PU leather, and the 13-inch sling can go in the washing machine. Canvas shrugs off a light splash, but the slings are not meant for heavy rain, and loads above 8 to 10 lbs push past their stated carry weight. Let canvas air dry flat so the laptop sleeve keeps its shape.
The printed backpacks are water-resistant polyester, and the 15.6-inch travel model is water-repellent nylon with a high-density lining. Wipe these with a damp cloth rather than soaking them. Water resistance handles drizzle on the walk to class; a downpour still calls for an umbrella in a side pocket.
Age labels vary between prints of the same backpack, so read the one on the model you choose. The dark blue floral print is marked for students over 8. The purple mermaid print is not for children 8 or younger, and the water blue swan and black leaves prints are not for anyone under 12. The kids crossbody sets are aimed at girls 8 to 12, while the gray set starts at 9.
